When the tide turned for the Pretender known as the Thistle King, and the Knights of the Pendragon Court stepped over the bodies of his fallen army, the highlander turned his rage inward. If he could not wield it, no one would.
Using the last of his strength - borrowed from a fae spirit, some say - he brought the flat of the blade down onto his knee and sundered his sword into pieces.
The tide had turned, but when the mists of battle cleared, the Thistle King, and Excalibur, were nowhere to be seen...

Without the sword, there could be no tourney to determine First Knight. Without the sword, the remnants of Uther's Kingdom seemed as shattered as the sword he once wielded.
With no sure course of action, the Lieges and Knights of the Knights' Council returned to their holdings, to see out the harvest, make preparations for winter, and tend to their own.

The following year, each region had problems of their own to manage, and although many came to the aid of their fellows, there seemed more pressing issues than travelling with baggage trains and retinues for a few days tourney and carousing, regardless of what politicking may be done.

The bond that held together the realm was beginning to fade. Some Nobles even found themselves wondering if the dream of a united Albion was something only fools sought, and made preparations to strengthen their borders. Among these, however, no one wanted to be the first to declare their sovereignty. After all, to a serf, a Lord Bannerette is quite the same as the grandest Emperor.

While the country seemed more divided than ever, the College of Heralds worked through the darkest nights of winter and the most scorching days of summer. Calling all sworn to them to the colleges at Veralamium, Eburacum and Isca, the Conclaves set out their grand plan: A census. Of all the holdings known to be loyal to Pendragon. A great book of every person in Albion, from the lowest serf to the highest Liege Lady. The greatest scholarly undertaking since the fall of Rome.

They would call all the members of the Interregnum Court to the tourney grounds near the village of Alderley, to make their case. And if it reminds the Loyalists what they fight for - what they wait for - all the better.
