Not so long ago - in the days of our great-grandparents - the world was different. The great cities of the fledgling Austro-Hungarian Empire were changing. Vienna, Pressburg and Budapest glowed with the new lights of the new, industrial age, while railways, factories, and modern inventions were reshaping the lives of those who resided within their walls.
But only a few hours beyond the city limits, another, ancient world still lingered. Under the canopy of the woods in the Mátra mountains, small communities lived their lives as they had for many generations, governed by tradition and faith. Meanwhile, outlaws and fugitives wandered the surrounding hills, swineherders and woodsmen followed hidden paths through the valleys. And when night fell, the creatures of folktales and legends came to life beyond the warm circles of campfires and lanterns.
This story opens a window into this, now-forgotten era.
The year is 1873.
In a small roadside csárda - an inn at the edge of the forest - the people of the surrounding villages gather as they often do: to drink, to dance, to share news, and to trade stories. And lately, there have been many stories worth sharing.
Less than three weeks ago, Márton Vidróczki, the legendary outlaw, was ambushed and killed by members of the gendarmerie. Since his violent death, however, something changed in this silent, ancient land. Strange lights flicker between the trees at night, heavy footsteps echo through the forest before dawn and livestock cover in fear at the back of their pens.
What’s happening underneath the branches of the forest? Could this beautiful land truly be cursed?
Listen to your instincts, follow the will o’ wisp, and join us on a journey back in time, into the forgotten forests of the Mátra!

Will o’ Wisp is a two-day long, Hungarian dark folk LARP, inspired by the country’s history, folklore and the works of figures such as directors Hayao Miyazaki, Guillermo del Toro, author Katherine Arden and native poet, János Arany.
The game blends the historical world of 19th century Hungarian outlaws with the eerie atmosphere of traditional folk mythology in a character-driven, dramatic experience, where 40 ordinary people - villagers, travelers, fugitives, and highwaymen - find themselves caught in the middle of strange and extraordinary events.
